Well, this is a chicken story that doesn't end well. About 2:30 this morning a dog managed to break into the chicken coop and put an end to my sweet girls. I always worried that the hinged area designed to be lifted for accessing the eggs was the weakest point of the set up, and it proved to be, despite having a lock on it, the dog managed to break through the gap where the slanted roof met the wall of the coop.
I didn't hear the chickens make a sound, but I kept hearing a dog kind of whining and barking nearby, and I went out to make sure it wasn't bothering the chickens, and there it was, stuck in the coop, it couldn't figure out how to get out again once it was in.
Poor Bill had just gotten home from a 16 hour drive, and was tearfully recruited for dog removal, I couldn't face it. I'm sickened that all my hard work (plus the expense) has gone to waste, but I hate most to think of them dying like that. I guess I hadn't realized just how attached I had become to the ladies. Anyway, what's done is done, not the end of the world, just very disappointing and sad, I'll learn from it and try again. I had a couple of scrambled eggs for breakfast in their honour, and thought about how awesome their eggs would have been. So sorry girls that it ended like that for you.
